Empowerment Weekend 2015
September 26, 2015 @ 12:00 pm - September 27, 2015 @ 6:30 pm
On Saturday September 26, 2015, UNITY Performing Arts Foundation will host the most recent installment of its incredible Empowerment Weekend. The event will take place at the Rhinehart Music Center on the campus of Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne from Noon – 3:00 PM.
This unique and exciting event is an educational program designed to expose our students to successful professionals from the community, to help them develop life skills in a positive manner, rather than a preventative manner. The goal of Empowerment Weekend is to equip, educate, and empower our young people.
Empowerment Weekend includes a series of breakout sessions in which the members of the youth choral program, Voices of Unity Youth Choir, and the creative writing program, Expression engage in interactive group learning activities relevant to their age groups. This program helps our students to improve their social and communication skills as they participate in the group sessions.
The exciting theme for the 2015-2016 year is “The Power of Learning.” We will kick-off the year with an amazing look at world of space science, and will participate in an interactive lecture with the Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs at Ivy Tech Community College, Mr. Chris Cathcart, MBA. Throughout the day, students will participate in breakout sessions on topics including Careers and Student Internships with NASA, using technology to track US Space Station information an the latest information and research on our solar system. Students will also have the exciting opportunity to build, and race, balloon rockets. Later in the year, students will also have the opportunity to delve into the complex world of engineering, by exploring the latest innovations in mechanical engineering at the local General Electric (GE) plant.
One might wonder why a performing arts organization is including science related activities in its schedule of events, especially those who are unfamiliar with UNITY. While UNITY is a performing arts organization, our focus is not solely the performing arts. We also focus strongly on the areas of youth development and leadership. We understand, in today’s society, students need to be exposed to the various positive opportunities life can bring. Exposing our students to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) careers can serve as an inspiration for them to one day become part of the field, and, because UNITY is a diverse organization, can perhaps add to the growing cultural diversity in this career field. Everything has a purpose. Everything is connected in UNITY.
This year, Empowerment Weekend will also be extended to include our students’ parents and guardians. The parent and guardian session will simultaneously take place with Voices of Unity’s Sunday evening rehearsal, from 4:30 – 6:30 PM. Parents will be able to remain on campus while their students are in rehearsal. Events planned for the parents and guardians will explore what they can do to enhance their lives and thus directly and positively influence the lives of their children. We will offer workshops on effective and creative use of technology, as well as building and understanding financial foundations. Having a platform in which the entire family can come for a one-stop-shop learning opportunity can add value to a family. When a student sees his or her parent or guardian actively engaged in positive activities, especially those with interest to the child’s activities, it inspires the child to do the same when they become an adult. It also shows a positive example of personal development, commitment and sacrifice.
